in the past few hours, media mogul rupert murdoch and his son james have agreed to appear before the british parliament investigating that phone hacking scandal involving rupert murdoch's british empire. and that testimony will take place next week, and rebecca brooks will also testify, and former executive neil wallace became the ninth person arrested in connection with this tabloid scandal. here in the u.s., you may have already heard six senators and a congressman are now calling on the fbi to investigate allegations that "news of the world" reporters tried to hack into the phones of 9/11 victims and their families. empire. will rupert murdoch keep his crown? we'll discuss that later. now back to the top story, the partisan gamesmanship ramping up in debt ceiling talks. did they accomplish anything tonight? >> i wish i had a different answer than i had last night but again no breakthroughs today. i'll tell you that going into today's meeting the prospects from the perspective of capital reaching a deal, the prospects really seemed grim today. both sides hardening in their positions. inside the white house, inside this meeting, we are told by eric cantor as he returned to the capital following a meet, inside this meeting, the president laid out in further detail his plan for entitlement reforms, that eric cantor, the number two republican in the house, that he said the republicans could actually support, but here's the big "but" unfortunately, but they're still not budging on the issue of taxes. and democrats are insisting on new revenue, on tax revenue. so hence why i say no breakthroughs again today. another thing discussed in this meeting was this new proposal being pitched out there by t

scandal threatening rupert murdoch's media empire. now in washington a growing number of congressional leaders are calling for an investigation into whether any news corp. properties hacked americans. stephanie gosk joins us from london. i understand the murdochs are resisting calls to testify in london. do they have a choice? >> they have a choice for this summons to show up in front of parliament. there is no legal binding but there is a judge led inquiry cameron called for that is pending and that inquiry might call them to testify and rupert murdoch said he will go and testify before them. rebekah brooks his executive at news international said she will show up at parliament next tuesday but she added a caveat, said she would not answer any questions that would prejudice the ongoing investigation. you would have to imagine that could be quite a few of those questions because they're going to want to get at this issue as illegally hacking phones. chris? >> let me ask you also about what you know about what's happening here. several lawmakers including new york congressman peter king
